La Salle-URL organizes a day to analyze the ethical challenges of artificial intelligence in the education sector
Experts from different disciplines highlight the importance of critical thinking and technological regulation
Tuesday, February 25, 2025. La Salle-URL has organised and hosted the Education and Artificial Intelligence conference to analyse the use of this technology and the ethical implications of its development in the education sector. The event, organised by the FiloCultura research line of the Smart Society group and in collaboration with the Ethics and Artificial Intelligence Observatory of Catalonia (OEIAC), has sought answers to questions about ethics, human values and technological limitations, trying to confront critical thinking with artificial intelligence.
The conference featured expert speakers from different disciplines: Elisabet Golobardes, Vice-Rector for Academic Organization and Quality and Digital University of the URL; Rosa Ma. Alsina, Director of Research and Innovation of La Salle-URL; Carles Llinàs, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of La Salle-URL; Joan Manuel del Pozo, Professor at the University of Girona; and Ulisses Cortés, Professor and Researcher at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia - Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The moderators of the round table were Armando Pego, Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of La Salle-URL; and Albert Sabater, Director of the OEIAC.
Artificial intelligence, a tool to be regulated
One of the debates that emerged during the colloquium was to reflect on whether everyone with internet access should have access to the resource of artificial intelligence. Joan Manuel del Pozo presented his point of view on the conflict: "We have gone from wisdom to knowledge and from knowledge we have gone to information. Now, practically, we do not talk about wisdom. Moreover, there are those who spread the idea that we have gone from information to infoxication, which is the overload or excess of information caused by the profusion of content on the network", commented the speaker.
After that, Joan Manuel del Pozo shared what could be the solution to this problem: "The solution lies in the rule of law, which is the key to regulating AI and ending its threat of control over society, causing it to be used by those who really know it".
The speakers agreed that society must set limits on artificial intelligence, especially in educational centers, since this tool kills students' creativity and originality by providing them with multiple solutions or common ideas. "We just have to see the difference in how a doctoral thesis is worked on today and how it was done 20 years ago. Before, you read manuals and books in the library, now you can ask on ChatGPT," added Rosa Ma. Alsina.
The importance of critical thinking about AI
Finally, the round table discussed the importance of the critical thinking in using and understanding the information offered by AI. The critical spirit is one that has the capacity to question principles, values and norms, forming its own criteria for making decisions in different situations. “AI has no sense of context. We do know in which world and in which situation we find ourselves”, concluded Elisabet Golobardes.
