Ramon Llull University formalizes an agreement with the founding universities of the ENGAGE.EU European Universities Alliance to participate in its future enlargement

European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel participates in the ENGAGE.EU enlargement event and meets with the rectors of the universities of the Alliance

Thursday, May 26, 2022Mariya GabrielEuropean Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, delivered the opening speech at the signing ceremony of the agreement to enlarge the ENGAGE.EU Alliance, which took place last 26th of May at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The signing of the collaboration agreement between the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki (Finland) and Ramon Llull University (Spain) within the ENGAGE.EU European Universities Alliance was formalized during the ceremony. Both universities will participate in the preparation of the proposal for the enlargement of this Alliance which will be submitted in the next call of the European Universities Initiative, scheduled for the beginning of 2023.

The Rector of UNWE, Dimitar Dimitrov, and Thomas Puhl, Rector of the University of Mannheim, coordinator of the Alliance, have welcomed all participants.  In addition to their speech, Commissioner Gabriel delivered a keynote speech on the topic of “Universities’ Role in Green and Digital Transitions”. The signing ceremony of the enlargement agreement was also attended by the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria, Acad. Nikolai Denkov.

Following the signing of this enlargement agreement and for two days, the rectors and representatives of the universities of the Alliance have participated in several working meetings to define the future actions of ENGAGE.EU, as well as to explore new synergies among the members of the university consortium.

These existing and new challenges, such as digitalisation and artificial intelligence, climate change, ageing societies, and migration, must be tackled successfully to ensure a sustainable and positive future. ENGAGE.EU will inspire active societal engagement in the current and future state of Europe – and beyond. The project is co-funded by the Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 programmes of the European Union.
