RETABIT, a platform to promote the sustainable rehabilitation of residential stock

22.04.2025

A research project led by La Salle-URL results in a transformative tool to modernize the building renovation sector with a sustainable approach

Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The RETABIT project, led by the Architecture Representation Computation research line of the Human Environment Research (HER) group at La Salle-URL Campus Barcelona, has presented a platform designed to transform the building renovation sector. The RETABIT platform enables a comprehensive analysis of the renovation potential of residential buildings in a municipality, integrating various data sources such as land registry records, energy certificates, demographics, housing costs, residents' income levels, and accessibility to public facilities, among others.

On March 20, 2025, at an event held at the La Salle-URL School of Architecture, researchers from the campus and the Institute for Energy Research of Catalonia (IREC) who participated in this project presented an online tool that offers a comprehensive analysis of the residential stock. The RETABIT platform integrates 11 public data sources, including the cadastre, cartographic databases, facilities, energy certificates, the annual population census, and housing rental prices. Based on these data, 15 indicators have been created to assess the state of the residential building stock and develop renovation strategies that address the multiple dimensions of sustainability.

The platform is composed of two interrelated environments: RETABIT Analiza, accessible to the public, which offers a multidimensional analysis of residential buildings in the municipalities of Catalonia, classifying them according to energy, socioeconomic, and environmental indicators; and RETABIT Planifica, aimed at government officials and industry professionals, which facilitates strategic renovation planning and the evaluation of the impact of renovation programs through simulations.

The platform's functionalities have been verified in collaboration with local governments and entities, such as the Sant Cugat del Vallès City Council, the Rubí City Council, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Barcelona Energy Agency, and the Europace Foundation.
