Laia Muntal, graduate of the ESDi-URL, national emerging fashion award at Mallorca Design Day
Tuesday, February 23, 2023. The winner of the IV edition of the Mallorca Design Day design festival competition has already been announced in the emerging fashion category. It is the Catalan designer Laia Muntal, a graduate in Fashion Design from the ESDi-URL Higher School of Design (affiliated center) in Sabadell. Laia has won the award thanks to her final degree project “MUBA“. This project was born after researching the current fashion scene and the post-covid world, which needs a resilient transformation to evolve.
“Redefined Collection” is a MUBA collection based on the concept of creating contemporary, functional and timeless fashion, applying the circular economy as much as possible.
“I entered the Mallorca Design Day competition thanks to ESDi’s publications in social media; I thought it was a great opportunity and I didn’t hesitate to submit my work. Winning this award was a great surprise, as I competed with other very good designers at a national level. It’s great that there are organisations like this that promote talent and believe in disciplines such as fashion. I am proud that my effort and creativity are valued in such a demanding and competitive sector”, says Laia Muntal.
The jury, chaired by Modesto Lomba, president of ACME, and formed by the designers María Lafuente, Pablo Erroz and Ulises Mérida, the editor of Metal Magazine David Alarcón, the head of communication of Coca Cola European Partners Iberia in the Balearic Islands Gabriel Mulet, and the founder and director of Mallorca Design Day Raquel Arañón.
Laia Muntal has won the 4th edition of the Mallorca Design Day competition from a total of 51 entries from nine different autonomous communities. The director of the event, Raquel Arañón, highlighted the high level of the participants. “Participation is growing with each edition, making Mallorca the meeting point for new promises,” Arañón commented. The winning collections in the fashion category will be shown on the catwalk to be held on 24 March at the Fábrica Ramis (Inca). At the event, prizes will be awarded in the different disciplines: fashion, interior design and food design.
The programme of the design festival will be announced in the coming weeks. Mallorca Design Day will be held on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of March in Palma and Inca. This festival is positioning the island of Mallorca as a benchmark for emerging national and Balearic design.
